Across America, one low-middle income family from each state is competing against one another to see who has the largest reduction in their energy costs during the months of April, May and June. It is called the “30-60-90 Day Challenge” and each family will be blogging about what steps they are taking to reduce their energy bills from 2009's April-June period.Sponsored by The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and a diverse group of other organizations, the Anybody Can Serve, So Let’s Conserve campaign kicked off in January 2009 to coincide annually with the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. This campaign rolled out the “30-60-90 Day Challenge” to demonstrate how families can take simple steps to lower their energy usage, save on utility bills, and help clean up the environment.
Minnesota is proudly represented by Tou Yang and his family of 7 from Saint Paul. Since the “30-60-90 Day Challenge” largely focuses on behavioral changes to reduce energy consumption, Tou has many opportunities to affect change within his family. Anybody Can Serve outfitted Tou with an energy efficiency toolkit, which included energy efficient light bulbs, a heater insulation blanket, weatherstripping tape and caulking. Tou will be blogging and uploading pictures and videos, so the general public can follow his progress.“The 30-60-90 Day Challenge will demonstrate how easy it is for families to conserve energy,” said Anybody Can Serve Chair Colette Honorable. “We hope that people tune in, follow along, and learn. This is the nexus between energy efficiency and reality TV.”
